A must-do in Quito - the views show you the whole city and the swing in the clouds is really fun. Go early before the crowds, and skip the $1 photo platform: take the short, slightly painful trail to the swings instead.

The winged Virgin over the city - a 41-meter aluminum statue with a great viewpoint. Worth the trek, but take a taxi up if you're alone or anywhere near dark.

Free and always alive - the beating heart of Quito. Grab a bench, watch the kids play and the artists selling paintings and handmade jewelry.

Great little ceramics workshop in La Floresta - beautiful, unique pieces from local artisans, and the owner is so sweet. The cafe next door, Media Agua, is fabulous too.

You can paint and fire your own piece here, and the prices are more than reasonable.

Great, friendly panaderia - sit at the bar and watch the baker work. Everything I've tried has been excellent and it's very reasonable. Service can be slow at peak times.

Street art gallery full of local artists and collectives - feels like walking through a home with unique pieces everywhere, good prices, even some Shepard Fairey prints. Leave with a sticker at least.
